Cheap, cheerful, American food to-go.
When it’s 4pm on a Saturday afternoon, in the witching hour between lunch and dinner services, your ferocious hunger can now be satiated with a €4 hot dog from Hutch.
Which is precisely how we found it. Destitute and starving on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis, at a time when surrounding restaurants (and even burger joints) take a nap/prepare for Saturday night service.
It’s alarmingly simple for France. Hot dog (volaille) and bun (au lait) are chosen for you, all you have to worry about is toppings. Pickles, onions, ketchup, sauerkraut, mustard, chilli, cheddar; all the friends of the hot dog are here.
Simply pick your poison, perch on the terrace and wash it all down with a Coke. For those still of hunger, there are bagels, cheesecake, fresh juices or Brooklyn lager.
Consider it your little slice of Bushwick with both the American work ethic and American prices.
Impress fellow hipsters: there is also a Hutch hot-dog house on Rue Saint Marthe, north of the Canal Saint-Martin. Take one to go and have a beer au canal.
